How to beat the Bird's Opening
1.f4: White grabs e5, aims for a reversed Dutch and often a kingside attack with Nf3, e3, Be2 or b3 and Bb2. It's rare at club level, so few people prepare for it, and even the top titled players scored only 59% as Black against it in 47 games, below their 62% average as Black.
Three plans that work
1. Claim the centre with 1...d5
1...d5 (Lichess calls it the Dutch Variation) takes e4 away and gives you an easy set-up: ...Nf6, ...g6 and ...Bg7 or ...e6, then ...c5 and ...Nc6. The long-diagonal bishop on g7 blunts White's b2 bishop.
2. Use the weakened e1-h4 diagonal
1.f4 loosens White's kingside. Ideas like ...Bg4 or ...Qb6 against e3 and b2, and ...Qh4+ tricks in open lines, cause real problems if White castles slowly.
3. Or go for From's Gambit if you like sharp play
1...e5!? 2.fxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6 gives Black fast development and attacking chances. Know the trap: 4.Nc3?? Qh4+ 5.g3 Qxg3+ 6.hxg3 Bxg3 is checkmate. The main line 4.Nf3 g5 is sharp, so only play it if you've studied it. If White answers 1...e5 with 2.e4, you're in a King's Gambit.
A line to play
1.f4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e3 g6 4.b3 Bg7 5.Bb2 O-O 6.Be2 c5 7.O-O Nc6
The pitfall
Playing slowly on autopilot. If you castle and shuffle, White's standard plan of Qe1-h4, Ng5 and f5 can arrive with real force. Get ...c5 and central play going first, and watch the h2-b8 and e1-h4 diagonals.
