How to beat the Caro-Kann Defense
A rock-solid defence to 1.e4: Black supports ...d5 with ...c6 and gets a healthy pawn structure. Caro-Kann players often like long, quiet games, so the way to beat them is to take the game somewhere sharp or cramped.
Three plans that work
1. Play the Advance Variation with an early attack
3.e5 gains space. After 3...Bf5, the Short system (4.Nf3 e6 5.Be2) is solid, while 4.h4 or 4.Nc3 with g4 hunts the bishop and creates sharp, unfamiliar positions.
2. Or grab space with the Two Knights
2.Nc3 d5 3.Nf3 sidesteps the main-line theory most Caro-Kann players know best.
3. Get your pieces out fast
Black's set-up is slow. Develop quickly, castle and open the centre with c4 or f4 before Black finishes.

The pitfall
Simple swaps lead to the endgames Caro-Kann players love. Keep pieces on if you are the stronger player.
