How to beat the Queen's Gambit Declined
One of the oldest and most respected defences: Black keeps a solid pawn on d5 and develops calmly. In our data it was one of the openings where titled players scored worst as Black.
Three plans that work
1. Play the Exchange Variation and the minority attack
cxd5 exd5, then Bd3, Qc2, Nge2 or Nf3, and later b4-b5 to give Black a weak pawn on c6. Clear plan, low risk.
2. Pressure c7 and the half-open c-file
Rooks to c1, a knight on e5, and pressure against Black's queenside: QGD players often end up a little passive.
3. Don't release the tension too early
Holding the c4/d5 tension makes it harder for Black to free the c8 bishop.
A line to play
1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.cxd5 exd5 5.Bg5 Be7 6.e3
The pitfall
Black's freeing breaks ...c5 and ...e5 equalise easily if you drift. Know your plan before the game.
