1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5: Black lets White build a big pawn centre, then attacks it with the g7 bishop, ...c5 and ...Nc6. It's sharp and very theoretical, but it didn't trouble the top titled players much: in our sample they scored 71% as White against it in 36 games, above their 67% average as White.

Three plans that work

1. Take the centre with the Exchange Variation

4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4 Nxc3 6.bxc3 gives you the classical pawn centre on c3, d4 and e4. Develop with Nf3, Be2 or Bc4, castle, and keep d4 protected. It was the most common Grünfeld line in our sample: titled players scored 70% with White in 15 games.

2. Use the Rb1 idea against the g7 bishop

After 6...Bg7 7.Nf3 c5, 8.Rb1 takes the rook off the long diagonal, eyes b7 and prepares Be2 and O-O. Black's play is all about pressure on d4 and c3, so every move that defends them (Be3, Rb1, Qd2) takes the sting out.

3. Or keep it quieter with 4.Nf3

4.Nf3 Bg7 followed by e3 (or Qb3, hitting d5) holds back the big centre and avoids the main Exchange theory. Lichess calls 4.Nf3 the Three Knights Variation: titled players scored 71% with White in 17 games, though that sample is small.

The pitfall

Letting the centre become a target. After ...c5, ...Nc6, ...Bg4 and ...Qa5, Black piles up on d4 and c3. Don't push d5 or e5 unless it wins something concrete; a loose advanced pawn is exactly what Grünfeld players are waiting to collect.
